Weight Loss Injections (GLP-1)

How GLP-1 Medicines Work

Medical weight loss is doctor-supervised treatment with prescription medicine. It is for adults whose weight has started to affect their health, and who haven't kept weight off through diet and exercise alone.

GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after a meal. It signals fullness and slows how quickly food leaves the stomach. GLP-1 medicines mimic it, so hunger quietens, you feel satisfied sooner and that feeling lasts longer.

They support a reduced-calorie diet and regular activity. They never replace them.

Our GLP-1 Options

Both medicines we offer are once-weekly injections. Each begins at a low dose that rises in steps, which helps limit side effects.

Semaglutide: acts on the GLP-1 pathway alone.

Tirzepatide: acts on GLP-1 and a second gut hormone, GIP.

Your doctor recommends the one that fits your health, goals and how your body responds.

How the Injections Are Given

Everything starts with an in-person consultation. Your doctor goes through your medical history, current medicines, weight and goals, then decides whether a GLP-1 medicine suits you.

If one does, you're taught to inject it yourself at home with a pre-filled pen. The needle goes just under the skin of the lower stomach, thigh or upper arm. Choosing a different spot each week helps prevent bruising and swelling.

You'll receive aftercare notes to take home, and follow-up reviews at the clinic let your doctor check your progress, side effects and dose.

Steady progress, reviewed at every step.

Possible Side Effects

Most people manage well on GLP-1 injections, but some side effects are common, particularly at the start:

  • Stomach upsets: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, which usually settle as the body adjusts
  • Injection site: mild redness, bruising, swelling or tenderness
  • Headache and tiredness: most likely in the early weeks, and tend to ease with time
  • Changes to the face: faster weight loss can leave the face looking hollower, with looser skin

Tell your doctor about any symptom that concerns you.

Risks

Some risks are less common. Your doctor explains them before you start and watches for them at each review:

  • Gallstones and pancreatitis: gallstones become more likely when weight comes off quickly, and inflammation of the pancreas has been reported rarely
  • Low blood sugar: mainly in people also taking diabetes medication
  • Thyroid tumours: seen in animal studies of GLP-1 medicines, though a link in people has not been established
Who is it for?

GLP-1 weight loss injections may suit adults who:

  • Have a BMI of 30 or above
  • Have a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related health condition
  • Haven't kept weight off with diet and exercise alone
  • Are ready to pair treatment with lasting changes to eating and activity

They aren't right for everyone. They aren't used if you or a close relative has had certain thyroid cancers, if you've had pancreatitis, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor confirms suitability at consultation.
