Shoulder & Calf reshaping

What is Shoulder & Calf Reshaping?
Some people feel their shoulders look broad, square or heavy, with a thick band of muscle rising from the neck. Others feel their calves look bulky, out of proportion with the rest of the leg, or more muscular than they would like. Both are natural variations in body shape and are not a health problem.
The cause is not always the same from person to person. In many cases it is muscle bulk, but bone structure and fat can play a part too. Working out which one applies is the first step, and where muscle is the cause, treatment can help soften the contour gradually.

What Causes Prominent Shoulders and Bulky Calves
A rounded shoulder line or a thick lower leg is usually a mix of muscle, bone and fat. Shoulder & Calf reshaping can come from a range of factors, including:
- Muscle bulk from habits: The upper trapezius, the muscle running from the neck to the shoulder, can enlarge with constant use. Hunching over a desk, carrying heavy bags and holding tension in the shoulders all keep it working.
- Exercise and sport: Heavy shoulder workouts, running, cycling, dance and stair training build the trapezius and the calf muscle (the gastrocnemius). Well-developed muscle is normal, but not everyone likes how it looks on the shoulders or legs.
- Footwear: Regular high heels keep the calf muscle shortened and working hard, which over time can leave it looking fuller.
- Genetics: Some people are simply born with larger muscle bellies, thicker calves or stronger shoulder lines, even with little exercise.
- Bone structure: Wide collarbones or a broad shoulder frame, and the way the lower leg bones are set, shape the outline in ways muscle treatment cannot change.
- Body fat: A layer of fat over the shoulders or around the calves adds to size and softens the shape. Muscle and fat are treated differently, so telling them apart matters.
Treatments for Shoulder & Calf reshaping at ARTÉ
The right plan depends on whether muscle, fat or bone is behind your shape, and on your goals. It starts with a consultation with Dr. Michelle.
Botulinum Toxin
Botulinum Toxin can be used for body-contouring in specific areas, namely the trapezius, shoulders and calves. It reduces the activity of overactive muscles which then gradually reduce in size. Results take around 1-2 months to fully set in and last around 6 months.
Possible side effects: Mild bruising, swelling or tenderness at the injection points can occur and usually settles. Some people feel temporary muscle heaviness or fatigue, and in the calves, occasional cramping or a different feel when walking a long way. A consultation is needed first, and results vary from person to person.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does botulinum toxin help with body contouring?
Botulinum toxin reduces the amount of nerve signals that keep a muscle active. When a muscle is used less, it gradually shrinks in size.
Will it work if my shape comes from fat or bone?
Toxin acts on muscle only, so it is not designed for fat or bone. If fat or bone is the main reason, Dr. Michelle will say so at your assessment and discuss other options, or tell you if treatment would not give a meaningful change.
Do the results last?
The results from body contouring with Botulinum Toxin can be expected to last 4-6 months on average, after which muscle bulk returns as the muscle becomes more active. Repeat sessions maintain the slimmer contour, and Dr. Michelle will advise a schedule that suits you.
Will it affect how I walk, exercise or lift things?
It can cause temporary weakness in the treated muscle, which usually peaks between the first and second month following the treatment. Calves and shoulders work hard in running, sport and carrying loads, so tell Dr. Michelle about your routine. The plan can be adjusted around the activities that matter most to you.
Who should not have this treatment?
It is not suited to everyone. Professional athletes and dancers, anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, and people with certain nerve or muscle conditions may be advised against it. Dr. Michelle will review your medical history first.
Will my shoulders or calves look too thin?
That is not the aim. Dr. Michelle aims for a gentle, proportionate change, keeping your shape in balance with the rest of your body rather than removing bulk aggressively.
