Wegovy® is a brand name for semaglutide, a prescription medication used for chronic weight management. It’s an injectable drug that helps reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, leading to weight loss.
Wegovy works by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which regulates appetite and food intake. Administered as a weekly subcutaneous injection, this medication works alongside a calorie-reduced diet and regular physical activity to support weight loss.
Each week, you'll administer a dose of Wegovy® using a pre-filled pen. The dosing starts low and gradually increases over 16 weeks to minimize side effects. The journey begins with a 0.25 mg dose, which increases every four weeks until reaching a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly.
The injection is typically administered on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without meals. If you miss a dose, you can take it within five days of the missed dose. If more than five days have passed, skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dose.
Wegovy® is designed to be used alongside a comprehensive weight management plan, not as a standalone solution.
Many individuals begin to notice weight loss within the first few weeks, with more significant results typically observed after 3–6 months.
Ongoing use is essential to maintain weight loss. Stopping treatment may lead to weight regain, especially without sustained diet and exercise.
After each injection, you may experience mild side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, or headache. These are usually temporary and subside as your body adjusts.
Stay hydrated and eat smaller, more frequent meals to help manage any discomfort.
Regular follow-up appointments with the doctor are essential to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
