Double Chin

What is a Double Chin?

A double chin is fullness beneath the chin that blurs the definition where the jaw meets the neck. It can look like a soft pad you can pinch, or like skin that has slackened and hangs a little when you look down. Many people notice it in photos, or from the side, before they see it in the mirror.

It is not only a question of weight, and it can affect people of any size. Because the fullness can come from fat, from looser skin, or from both, the first step is finding out which. From there, treatment can help create a cleaner, more defined line under the chin.

What Causes Double Chin

Two different things can sit behind a fuller under-chin. One is fat collecting in the space below the chin. The other is skin and soft tissue that have lost their support and no longer hold a firm line. Many people have some of each, and telling them apart shapes what will help. Double Chin can come from a range of factors, including:

  • Fat under the chin: Some people store fat in this spot, and it can stay even when the rest of the body slims down.
  • Loose skin and weaker support: As collagen and elastin fall with age, the skin under the jaw slackens and the lower face looks heavier.
  • Genetics: Family traits influence where fat sits, how firm the skin stays and how the chin and jaw are shaped.
  • Weight changes: Gaining weight can add to the fat pad, and losing it can leave the skin less taut.
  • Posture: Long hours with the head tilted forward and down can weaken the tissue that holds the area up.
  • Chin structure: A smaller or set-back chin can make the area beneath it look fuller than it is.

Fullness under the chin that appears suddenly, hurts or comes with other symptoms needs a medical check before any treatment.

Treatments for Double Chin at ARTÉ

Some treatments work on fat, some tighten skin, and some do a little of both. The right choice depends on what lies behind your double chin, and Dr. Michelle works through that with you at a consultation. The treatments below run in that order: fat first, then tightening, then those that combine the two.

Onda Pro

Onda Pro uses microwave energy to warm the fat beneath the skin, while built-in cooling looks after the surface. The warmed fat cells are broken down and cleared by the body over the following weeks. A small handpiece reaches tight spots, such as beneath the chin and near the jaw. It is usually given as a course of sessions, with most people carrying on with their day afterwards.

Ultherapy PRIME

Ultherapy PRIME uses focused ultrasound that is guided by imaging, so the heat lands in the supportive layer under the skin. The body then rebuilds collagen slowly, and the skin beneath the chin can look firmer and lifted. Its strength is in tightening, so it tends to suit fullness that comes mainly from loose skin rather than a thick pad of fat.

Sofwave

Sofwave delivers parallel beams of ultrasound at a set depth within the skin, while a cooled surface shields the top layer. The skin answers by producing fresh collagen and elastin. Below the chin and across the neck, that can mean a gentle lift and firmer texture. Mild to moderate looseness tends to respond well, and change builds gradually.

XERF

XERF is a needle-free radiofrequency treatment. Two frequencies warm the skin at different depths, while a chilled tip protects the surface. The heat prompts collagen to tighten and renew, which can firm the jawline and neck skin and sharpen the line beneath the chin. Recovery is usually quick.

InMode Forma

InMode Forma uses bipolar radiofrequency to heat the skin, with sensors watching the temperature throughout. That warmth nudges collagen and elastin along, so slack skin below the chin and around the jowls can feel firmer across a series of visits. Many people liken the sensation to a warm massage.

InMode Mini FX

Built for small zones, InMode Mini FX is often used under the chin. Radiofrequency heat, soft suction and short energy pulses work together to reduce a small fat pocket and firm the skin above it. Expect warmth and a light tug. A modest fat pad with slight slackness is the kind of chin it suits.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 combines tiny needles that carry radiofrequency energy deep into the skin, remodelling collagen and softening small fat bulges. It is used on the jawline and neck for early to moderate ageing changes, where fat and slackness both play a part. Pinkness and slight swelling are common afterwards.

Possible side effects: Energy treatments can leave warmth, redness or mild tenderness, and injections can cause swelling or small bruises. Most of this fades by itself. A consultation is needed first, and results vary from person to person.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know which treatment suits my double chin?

Dr. Michelle looks at your chin and neck at rest and as you move, and feels how much is soft fat and how much is loose skin. She also considers your jaw shape and posture. The result of that assessment decides where your plan begins.

Can fat treatments and tightening treatments be combined?

Yes, and many plans do this. If a fat pad and slack skin both contribute, reducing the fat alone can leave skin looking looser. Pairing it with a tightening treatment can give a smoother finish. Your doctor will suggest the order and spacing.

Will the treatments be uncomfortable?

Injections and microneedling are done with numbing cream. Energy devices tend to feel like warmth with a little tugging or tingling, and cooling built into the device keeps the surface comfortable. Dr. Michelle explains the comfort options beforehand.

When will I see a difference, and how long does it last?

Changes are gradual. Fat reduction shows as the body clears treated cells, and tightening builds as collagen renews. A steady weight can help results hold, but ageing carries on, so occasional top-ups are common.

Will I need time off?

Downtime is usually short with these. Slight redness or swelling tends to ease soon, and microneedling can leave small pinpoint dots that take a little longer to fade.

Why Choose ARTÉ by Dr. M for Double Chin?

Doctor-Led Care

Your consultation, your plan and your treatment all stay with Dr. Michelle Ng. Having practised aesthetic medicine for over a decade, she knows how the lower face and neck carry fat, skin and support.

A Plan for Fat, Loose Skin or Both

A fuller chin from fat and one from loose skin are treated differently, so the first job is telling them apart. Dr. Michelle works out which one is contributing most, and studies jaw and neck side by side, since a change in one alters the other. Your plan may lean on fat reduction, on tightening, or on a mix of the two.

Natural-Looking Results

Sessions are paced to suit your proportions, so the line beneath your chin sharpens without looking overdone. We would sooner build up in steps.

Safety-First Approach

No treatment begins until you have been properly assessed. Every plan includes written aftercare and a follow-up visit, so your progress is checked.
